Media issues and policy expert
An expert in media issues and policy, Professor Vincent Mosco, the Canada Research Chair in Communications and Society, can comment on recent cases in Canada and Britain of journalists being reprimanded for their use of confidential information. Since he also tracks the American media scene, Dr. Mosco can compare freedom of the press in the U.S. and Canada. He questions whether an American journalist would have been charged under similar circumstances as Juliet O'Neill of the Ottawa Citizen, and speculates that Canadian journalists, worried about legal consequences, may hesitate to use sources or explore issues that they would previously have covered.
