Kenyan siege on Westgate Mall documented through social media: Queen's University expert

Queen’s University Al-Shabaab expert Kenneth Hall is available to talk about the terrorist group’s recent attack on Westgate Mall in Nairobi and their use of social media during that event.

Mr. Hall is a current Masters candidate in Philosophy and began his research on Al-Shabaab during his undergraduate degree at Queen’s. His research focuses mainly on Al-Shabaab’s recruitment in Western states and the structure and dynamics of their networks.

“Al-Shabaab’s use of social media, including the live-tweeting of the attack on Westgate Mall, reflects their desire to broadcast their messages and acts directly to Western audiences, circumventing the biases they see as inherent in Western media,” says Mr. Hall. “They want notoriety, but also the opportunity to communicate with any individuals in the West who may be sympathetic to their cause.”

Please note that Mr. Hall is only available for phone interviews.

To arrange an interview, please contact communication officers Rosie Hales (office: 613.533.6000 ext. 77513 (rosie.hales@queensu.ca) or Anne Craig (office: 613-533-2877, Anne.Craig@queensu.ca) at Queen’s University News and Media Services Department in Kingston, Ont., Canada.
