Ireland's new alliance
2010-03-19
While the unthinkable alliance between Northern Ireland’s Ian Paisley and IRA veteran Martin McGuinness has caught many people by surprise, Queen’s expert John McGarry says this union is something he has been predicting for some time. Surprisingly, he expects this coalition of ‘radical opposites’ to cooperate more successfully than the moderate parties on either side would have been able to.
John McGarry is an expert in ethnic and national conflict and the politics of Northern Ireland, and a professor of Political Studies at Queen’s University.
