Increased airport security fees

2010-03-19

Queen’s Sociology Professor David Murakami Wood is available to discuss the extra security fees Canadian air travelers will now pay to enhance surveillance and security measures at airports.
"The question is not just who should pay, but whether our Canada is making effective and efficient decisions that both keep us safe and protect the rights and freedoms that the government is supposed to uphold," says Professor Murakami Wood. "Every time either terrorists or the security industry says 'jump', we should not be asking 'how high?' but asking whether there might be better, more considered, long-term ways to respond that enhance our democratic and open society."
Dr. Murakami Wood is Canada Research Chair and associate professor of Surveillance Studies. He is also Managing Editor of Surveillance & Society, the international journal of surveillance studies, and a founder-member of the Surveillance Studies Network.
