Fujimori's Peru

2010-03-19

Queen’s political studies professor Catherine Conaghan, expert on Alberto Fujimori’s Peru can comment on Peruvian politics during Fujimori’s presidency, and current events unfolding as Fujimori plans to re-launch his political campaign from a Chilean prison.
In her new book Fujimori’s Peru – Deception in the Public Sphere, Dr. Conachan exposes the complex relationship between democracy and dictatorship, and shows how public institutions can both empower dictators and bring them down.
Dr. Conaghan was an election observer in Peru for the 1995 and 2000 elections and was the editor of the web site Peru Election 2000.
She is an engaging speaker. Her book, released at the end of October by the University of Pittsburgh Press follows Fujimori until his exile to Japan, but Dr. Conaghan is following recent events.
