Flaherty never let politics interrupt his humanity: Queen's University expert

2014-04-11

Queen’s University public mourning expert Jill Scott is available to discuss the emotional reaction in response to the sudden death of former finance minister, Jim Flaherty.

Dr. Scott is also able to discuss the complexities of grief in a political setting.

"Described as the 'Irish Lion,' as gritty and gregarious, as the fighter, politicians say Flaherty was a man who never let politics interrupt his humanity,” says Dr. Scott. “But is Flaherty's death still a political moment, an opportunity to say the right words to gain political credibility? Or is it a moment to drop partisanship and come together to remember a great man?"

Jill Scott is a professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Queen's University and the author of A Poetics of Forgiveness: Cultural Responses to Loss and Forgiveness (Palgrave Macmillan 2010).

Please note that Dr. Scott is only available for print and radio interviews.
