Engineered salmon
Queen’s University biochemistry and biology professor Peter Davies is available to discuss the possible approval of modified salmon. A Massachusetts company is asking the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve the marketing of genetically engineered salmon.
Professor Davies is a Canada Research Chair in protein engineering who has published numerous papers on fish modification. One of those papers, Evidence for Antifreeze Protein Gene Transfer in Atlantic Salmon, explored making Atlantic salmon more freeze-resistant by transferring antifreeze protein genes from the winter flounder to the genome of the salmon.
