William F. Flanagan reappointed dean of the Faculty of Law
Queen’s University is pleased to announce that William F. Flanagan has accepted reappointment as dean of the Faculty of Law for a five-year term effective July 1, 2013. The offer of reappointment from the Principal, Daniel Woolf, was in response to the recommendation of the advisory committee, chaired by Alan Harrison, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic).
Mr. Flanagan, who was originally appointed as dean of the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University in July 2005, holds a JD from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law (1985), a DEA in international economic law from the University of Paris I (1986) and an LLM from Columbia University (1989). He served as a law clerk to the Hon. Justice W.Z. Estey of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1986-87. Mr. Flanagan started teaching at Queen's University in 1991 and was appointed a Queen's National Scholar in 1996. He is the recipient of two teaching awards at the Faculty of Law (1994 and 1998).

Martin W. ten Hove — Head, Department of Ophthalmology
Martin ten Hove has been appointed head of ophthalmology at Queen’s University, Hotel Dieu Hospital and Kingston General Hospital for an initial term from March 1, 2013 to June 30, 2018. This appointment is announced by Alan Harrison, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s, and Sherri McCullough and Tom Buchanan, Chairs of the Boards of Directors for Hotel Dieu and Kingston General Hospitals. Dr. ten Hove had been serving as acting head of the department since April 1, 2012.
Following the receipt of his MD from Queen’s University in 1989 and the completion of his postgraduate training in neuroophthalmology as a McLaughlin Fellow at the University of Miami in 1995, Dr. ten Hove returned to Queen’s as an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. He was promoted to associate professor and awarded tenure in 2001.
As an active researcher in the neural mechanisms underlying visual attention, Dr. ten Hove has often been invited to present his work at national and international meetings. He has served on the Examination Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, on the Royal College Specialty Committee for Ophthalmology, and on the editorial boards for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Neuroophthalmology. He has worked with ORBIS, the CNIB and the University of West Indies to bring tertiary level ophthalmology to remote locations to help fulfill their educational and clinical needs. Dr. ten Hove served as the department’s postgraduate program director from the time of his appointment until 2000. He also previously served as Acting Head from 2003 to 2004 and he has been the deputy head of the Department of Ophthalmology since 2005.
In making this announcement, the provost and board chairs wish to express their appreciation for the excellent leadership provided by Dr. ten Hove as acting director of the department.

Renewal, tenure, and promotion applications
Under the terms of the collective agreement between Queen’s and Queen’s University Faculty Association for faculty, librarians and archivists, August 15 is the deadline for regular faculty to apply for renewal, tenure or promotion; librarians and archivists to apply for renewal, continuing appointment or promotion; and adjuncts to apply for promotion. Members must notify their unit head of their intent to apply for renewal, tenure, continuing appointment, or promotion by July 1.
