Office of the Principal
Sheilagh Dunn has been appointed the Director, Public and Government Affairs, effective October 4, 2010, as announced by Principal Daniel Woolf.
Ms Dunn is currently Assistant Director, Industry Partnerships, in the Office of the Vice-Principal (Research). In taking a lead role in government relations for the University, she brings considerable knowledge and involvement in many of the key policy issues facing the university, based on her years of experience with the Office of the Vice-Principal (Research), with the Office of Advancement and positions at all three levels of government. Ms Dunn has an Honours Bachelor of Arts from Queen's and a Master's of Education from OISE/University of Toronto.
Reporting directly to Principal Woolf, Ms Dunn will be a part of a team developing strategies and will execute operational plans to advance university priority initiatives in alignment with public and government interests. She will also support goals-oriented government liaison.
Ms Dunn succeeds Sean Conway, who is continuing as a Fellow in the School of Policy Studies and teaching in Political Studies, after serving four years as Special Advisor to the Principal (External Relations). For just over a year he was also Acting V-P (Advancement) prior to Tom Harris's appointment in January 2010. Mr. Conway’s background and expertise in government relations helped to advance the university's interests and priorities in Ottawa, Queen's Park and here in Kingston.
Department of Diagnostic Radiology
Annette McCallum has been appointed head of Diagnostic Radiology at Queen’s University, Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston General Hospital and Providence Care for an initial five-year term from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2015. These appointments are announced by Daniel Woolf, principal of Queen’s University, and Sherri McCullough, Chris Cunningham and Glen Wood, chairs of the boards of directors for the respective hospitals.
Initially trained as critical care nurse, Dr. McCallum obtained her master of science in nursing from the University of Toronto in 1987 and her doctor of medicine from McMaster University in 1991.
Following the completion of her internship training in internal medicine and residency in diagnostic imaging, she undertook a one-year fellowship in body imaging at the University of Toronto.
In 1998, Dr. McCallum was appointed as a staff radiologist at the University Health Network in Toronto and in 1999, she was appointed to the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at McMaster University as an assistant professor. Until 2003, she also served as section head of the Ultrasound Department at the Henderson Hospital Site.
In 2003, Dr. McCallum joined the Department of Diagnostic Radiology as assistant professor at Queen’s University and staff radiologist at Kingston General and Hotel Dieu Hospitals.
Dr. McCallum was recognized in 2004 for her contributions to education with a Queen’s Radiology Resident Teaching Award. She has served as medical director of the Eastern Ontario School of X-ray Technology since 2007 and in January 2008 she was appointed acting head of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology. As acting head, Dr. McCallum demonstrated her leadership skills and dedication to improving quality care within the department.

Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision
Audrey Kobayashi (Geography) and Roderick Lindsay (Psychology) are the recipients of the 2010 Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision as announced by the School of Graduate Studies and Research. Drs. Kobayashi and Lindsay will receive their awards at fall convocation.
The awards recognize outstanding supervisors from the Social Sciences and Humanities and from the Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Engineering who demonstrate an enthusiasm for the pursuit of knowledge, and who encourage research and professional development of the student through mentorship and guidance.
Lynda Jessup (Art History) and Kim McAuley (Chemical Engineering) won the awards last year.
Special Recognition for Staff Award nominations
This award recognizes staff members who consistently provide outstanding contributions during their workday, directly or indirectly, to the learning and working environment at Queen's at a level significantly beyond what is usually expected (e.g. improving the workplace efficiency, quality of worklife, customer service, problem-solving, etc.). Information and nomination forms are available on-line or the office of the Associate Vice-Principal (Human Resources) Room 308, Richardson Hall. The deadline for nominations is October 15.
Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science Renewal
Alistair MacLean’s term as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science ends on June 30, 2011. Dr. MacLean has indicated his willingness to extend his term for another two years, should it be the wish of the University community.
In accordance with the procedures established by Senate, a committee chaired by Bob Silverman, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), will be established to advise the Principal on the present state and future prospects of the Faculty of Arts and Science and on the reappointment of the Dean. Suggestions for membership on the Advisory Committee are requested and should be submitted in writing to the Office of the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) by Friday, October 15 2010.
Members of the University community are also invited to offer comments on the present state and future prospects of the Faculty of Arts and Science and its leadership. These comments should be submitted in writing to Mr. Silverman, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), via firstname.lastname@example.org. Respondents are asked to state whether they wish to have their letters shown, in confidence, to the members of the Advisory Committee.
Faculty invitation to fall convocation ceremonies in Grant Hall
Faculty will form a reception line to greet students as they enter Grant Hall before proceeding onto the stage. You are encouraged to attend and take this opportunity to congratulate students.
For the purposes of assembling the academic procession, we would ask you to join us in Room 209, Kingston Hall, no later than 30 minutes prior to the convocation ceremony.

Assembly: Graduates must be in their designated assembly room in Kingston Hall no later than 9:15 am for the morning ceremonies, and no later than 1:45 pm for the afternoon ceremonies.
Before graduates go to their assembly room, they are advised to give themselves time to do the following:
• Pick up their prepaid hood and gown in Kingston Hall, or rent their hood and gown if they have missed the deadline to rent online.
• Pick up their program and name card.
Please note: If graduates are late arriving, they may miss the academic procession and may not receive their diploma at the ceremony.
Academic regalia for procession: The Alma Mater Society rents academic hoods and gowns online to graduating students between September 7 and October 19 (access ends at 11 pm).
On the day of their convocation, graduates are requested to arrive at Kingston Hall one hour before the ceremony to pick up their prepaid hood and gown. They need to bring their student card and confirmation number. If they didn’t rent online, they are asked to bring their student ID and cash payment.
