Wayne Myles recognized with CBIE International Leadership Award
Director of the Queen’s University International Centre (QUIC), Wayne Myles, has been honoured by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) with a top prize in the association’s annual Excellence Awards competition.
The Internationalization Leadership Award recognizes outstanding leadership in the internationalization of Canadian education and/or the international education profession.
An international educator for almost 40 years, Mr. Myles has been Director of the QUIC since 1982. Under his leadership, QUIC has risen to the top echelon of such centres in Canada.
“Wayne is a master at building and leading a cohesive team,” says Dr. John Dixon, Associate Vice-Principal (Academic & International). “He has designed and implemented many novel QUIC programs that have benefited thousands of people around the world. These include pre-departure training for students embarking on exchange, study- or work-abroad experiences, and an innovative emergency support program.”
Mr. Myles approaches risk management in study/work-abroad through education, with a focus on sharing of responsibility between the University and students. In addition to developing leading-edge programs at Queen’s, Mr. Myles has shared his knowledge and skills with institutions across Canada and internationally, through both publications and presentations. Many institutions have implemented programs based on his ideas.
Mr. Myles is strongly committed to professional development, not only for Queen’s staff, but for the broader community. In 2003, he founded the International Educators Training Program (IETP), which provides state-of-the-art professional development courses and workshops for international educators from post-secondary institutions and organizations in Canada and abroad. Recognizing a need for a national organization for international educators in Canada, Mr. Myles played a leading role in founding the International Educators Association of Canada (IEAC) in 2005.
Mr. Myles will be presented with his Award at the annual meeting of the CBIE, which will be held in Toronto on Tuesday, November 10.
