Upcoming strawberry social benefits local charities
The Queen’s University Staff Association’s annual strawberry social is about more than eating strawberries. Proceeds from the event benefit local charities, and leftover food is donated to Martha’s Table.
“This year, the Queen’s United Way campaign was chosen because of its familiarity to a broad spectrum of people,” says Myrna Horton, QUSA’s business administrator.
Charities that have benefitted from proceeds in the past include Bereaved Families of Ontario, Kingston Extend-A-Family, Almost Home, and Big Sisters of Kingston. The event typically raises about $500 for local charities.
“It’s getting out, sitting on the grounds at Summerhill, talking with your colleagues and just enjoying the outside,” says Gillian Berry, one of the organizers of the event. “It’s a nice social event that can also benfit our local community and it’s not only for QUSA members, it’s for all Queen’s staff.”
Advance tickets are $4 for QUSA members and $4.50 for non-members, $2.50 for children until June 17. The Strawberry Social will take place Thursday, June 24, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on the Summerhill grounds.
