Students set to arrive for residence move-in weekend
Almost 4,000 first-year students are preparing to move in to the Queen’s 16 residence buildings on Saturday, September 4. The big move, which will occur on both main and west campus, will mean that some area streets will be re-routed to accommodate the extra traffic.
“It’s going to be a very busy day on campus,” says Micheline Boomhour, Manager of Residence Admissions. “Over 90 per cent of first-year students choose to live in residence, so we’ll be seeing lots of new faces.”
Staff have been in regular contact with students and parents since June, sending out weekly news e-mails, hosting a Facebook group, and producing a monthly newsletter for parents to prepare them for the big day.
Staff have also been working throughout the summer to plan move-in day – preparing bedrooms, answering a myriad of questions, and organizing upper-year students who will help with directions and greet new students and their families as they arrive.
Some streets around the residences will be re-routed as one-way on Saturday to accommodate the extra traffic throughout the day. A map showing the routes and affected streets is available on the residence website at: http://housing.queensu.ca/residences/movingintoresidence.asp
Parents can attend information sessions, ask questions at the parent booth and fill their student’s fridge at a special on-site store. To keep everyone’s energy up, a complimentary brunch is provided to all students and their families in each of the three campus dining halls.
For students and their parents, move-in day is a memorable one. “Students tell us that their residence community is a big part of the university experience,” says Ms Boomhour. “We’re looking forward to welcoming them home.”
