Special Olympics coming to campus
Queen’s will play a prominent role in the upcoming 2012 Special Olympics Provincial Games.
“We are excited to welcome athletes and their family, friends and fans to the campus,” says Roxy Denniston-Stewart, Associate Dean, Student Affairs. “Queen’s is pleased to be part of such an exciting community event. It is also a great opportunity for faculty, staff and students to get involved by volunteering to help out at the games.”
Special Olympics Provincial Games organizers selected Queen’s residences as the athletes’ village. The university will host basketball, bocce and power lifting competitions at various venues on campus and the closing ceremonies at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.
Over 1,000 athletes and coaches will attend the four-day event May 31-June 3. The Spring Games and other Special Olympic Ontario events are designed to enrich the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sport.
For more information about volunteering please visit either the Queen’s Human Resources website or the Special Olympics Ontario website.
