Queen's in the World

An award-winning program that has linked Queen’s students with development studies opportunities at Fudan University in Shanghai for the past eight years is broadening its scope and putting more emphasis on culture and language instruction.

The Development Studies Semester in Shanghai Program, recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2009 as a Model Bilingual Education Program, is transitioning to become the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Semester in Shanghai. It is administered at Queen’s by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLCU).

“We are thrilled to be administrating the Queen’s-Fudan program in Shanghai starting next fall,” says Donato Santeramo, Acting Head, LLCU. “LLCU will continue in the footsteps of the successful Development Studies Semester in Shanghai. At the same time, we will widen the scope for the new program by focusing on culture and language acquisition, becoming appealing to more students, and retaining some of the history and development modules.”

In response to growing demand, the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Semester in Shanghai is open to all third- and fourth-year Arts and Science students. Previously, the program drew most students from the departments of Global Development Studies, Political Studies and History. The program provides Queen’s and Fudan students the opportunity to study together in integrated courses.

“This is an exceptional program that further enhances Queen’s international links and reputation, and gives our students innovative learning experiences and the opportunity to gain valuable intercultural skills to engage successfully in today's global society,” says Jim Lee, Vice-Provost (International).

Approximately 15 students per year will be accepted into the program. Interested students are invited to attend an information session on February 6, 5 pm, in Room D207, Mackintosh-Corry Hall.
