The McGill-Queen’s University Press is one of the most prominent Canadian university presses in the United States and Europe and its visibility has grown over the years.

A 2011 external review of MQUP, commissioned by the two universities’ Provosts, provided recommendations for re-positioning the Press in its niche market for scholarly publishing. The review highlights MQUP’s business model, its position in Canada as a scholarly press, and its future costs and benefits.

“The Press has a solid reputation in Canada and internationally for high-quality scholarly publishing,” says Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) Alan Harrison who is also co-chair of MQUP’s Board of Directors. “We want to secure and build on that reputation in the future.”

The MQUP Board will be considering a new strategic plan at its next meeting later this year that builds on the recommendations from the review, with the goal of building on and increasing MQUP’s success as a scholarly publisher.

Senior editor Donald Akenson and two other staff members recently resigned from their positions at MQUP.

“I want to extend my appreciation to Dr. Akenson for his years of dedicated service to MQUP,” says Principal Daniel Woolf. “He has made a great contribution to a press that is a credit to its host universities.”

Queen’s will commence hiring procedures for new editors once a new strategy is in place to secure the Press’s future.

The Kingston office of the McGill-Queen’s University Press is temporarily suspending operations until this process is concluded. MQUP will continue operations through its Montreal office in the meantime.
