Queen's student finalist in MuchMusic HP Tuition contest
Jessica Steeves is one step closer to having MuchMusic and Hewlett-Packard pay her university tuition. The high school student from Oakville is getting ready for her first year of engineering at Queen’s and has entered a video in the MuchMusic HP Declare Yourself online contest. She’s now one of eight finalists and first prize is what every student wants—one year’s free tuition.
“The contest was to explain in your video why you deserve the money,” says Steeves. “My first thought was of everything I have done throughout my life to make a difference. I thought of the world and its fast pace and all the people in it. I had all of these visions of what I wanted. I did not know how they were going to fit together at the time.”
Her entry came together so well that she is in the finals for the grand prize. The finalist who collects the most votes on the MuchMusic website will be declared the winner and have their tuition paid. Steeves is encouraging everyone in the Queen’s community to watch and vote for her video because MuchMusic will show up on the winner’s campus during Frosh Week and handout HP notebooks and printers. She also wouldn’t mind the free tuition.
“It will honestly mean everything to me to win!” adds Steeves. “I could really use this money (I mean who couldn't?), but this money would allow me to work towards my goal of someday changing the world.”
Everyone is invited to vote once a day until August 31. You can watch, and vote, for Jessica’s video by visiting http://www.muchmusic.com/promo/hp09/
