Queen's hosts food sustainability advocate, Chef Michael Smith
Chef Michael Smith, award winning cookbook author, newspaper columnist, restaurant chef and roving Canadian cuisine ambassador is spending the day on the Queen’s campus on Monday, October 26. The “Chef Abroad” will be discussing food sustainability and preparing meals throughout the day with products from the local harvest.
The day starts early for Chef Smith. At 7:30am he’ll be departing with two busloads of guests for MyFarm, a southern-Ontario sustainability project.
“My Farm is a joint partnership between Queen’s University, Sodexo, Kingston and the surrounding communities,” says Amyna Mamdani, Regional Marketing Manager for Queen's University Hospitality Services by Sodexo. “Through the partnership we’re creating a teaching venue devoted to raising the awareness of sustainable development through the relationship between food, farm, environment and community. Chef Smith is a world-renowned food sustainability advocate, and he’s the perfect person to explain MyFarm’s goals.”
The agenda for Chef Smith’s visit to MyFarm includes a smudge ceremony by the Four Directions Aboriginal Student Centre, a delicious breakfast utilizing local products, a discussion of MyFarm and food sustainability by Chef Smith, and a tree planting ceremony.
Chef Smith will then return to the Queen’s campus to prepare a local, seasonal lunch on Leonard Field at 11:30am. He’ll host a book signing at Mackintosh-Corry Hall from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, and then prepare a local, sustainable dinner at 5pm on Leonard Field.
The public is invited to attend the events on the Queen’s campus. The cost for lunch by Chef Smith is $9.25 plus tax, and dinner is $11.25 plus tax.
