Queen's eye specialist honoured for digital teaching innovations
Sanjay Sharma (Ophthalmology and Epidemiology) is being recognized by the Ontario Medical Association for his innovative education methods that include using short videos to teach students how to diagnose and treat eye conditions.
“To receive this recognition is really an honour,” says Dr. Sharma, who also works as a retina specialist at Hotel Dieu Hospital. “I think it validates the concept of using digital content to educate patients and doctors, as well as the need for innovative technology platforms to disseminate medical information.”
Among the valuable online platforms Dr. Sharma has created over the last decade is Medskool2.0 - used by more than 20 medical schools in North America. Students use video posted on Medskool 2.0 for learning to diagnose and treat acute visual loss. Students using the online tool performed better than their counterparts being taught through traditional methods.
Research evaluating effectiveness of the Medskool 2.0 video platform was published this month in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology.
