Queen's, city resources help with spring move-out

2013-04-17

April is a busy month on campus, as students complete end-of-year exams and move, either within the city of Kingston or elsewhere.

The university has again partnered with the city, local businesses and St. Lawrence College to provide information to assist students with their move.

“We have worked closely with our partners to provide practical information that students need,” says Roxy Denniston-Stewart, Associate Dean of Student Affairs. “We want the moving process to be as seamless as possible for both the students and the community, and we recognize there are many details to be attended to during what is already a very, very busy time.”

Saturday, April 20 is Giveaway Day in Kingston. Residents are invited to put out reusable items they no longer want for neighbours who might like them. The city does not pick up Giveaway Day items left at the curb at the end of the day. Owners remain responsible for proper disposal of any remaining items. For a list of items that are and are not suitable for Giveaway Day, visit the City of Kingston website.

Unusable items and garbage can be disposed of at Kingston’s waste management transfer station at 62 Remy Place (off Dalton Avenue) from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The transfer station will have extended hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, April 27.

A Moving Marketplace will be held in the JDUC April 27 – May 1. The marketplace will include the collection of food for the AMS food bank, as well as the collection of clothes, hazardous waste, electronic waste, bicycles and bicycle parts, books and personal hygiene items.

Other coordinated services offered for students include:

  • Distribution of informational doorknob hangers in the near campus neighbourhood.
  • Selling moving materials (boxes, tape, etc.) in the JDUC from now until the end of April.
  • Charity clothing and food donation pick-up in residence lounges.

A Facebook group called Queen’s Free & For Sale is also a great resource for buying and selling items.
