PSAC applies to represent postdoctoral fellows

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) has applied to represent the university’s postdoctoral fellows in collective bargaining.

“I urge all postdoctoral fellows to participate in the voting process to ensure that they have the opportunity to express their individual choice with respect to whether or not they want to be represented by a union,” says acting associate vice-principal (Human Resources) Al Orth.

When a vote is held, the decision is based on the ballots cast. The union, in order to be certified, as the bargaining agent requires 50 per cent plus one of the ballots cast to be in their favour.

“This means that a small number of people could determine the result unless there is strong voter turnout,” says Mr. Orth. “It is very important to vote so that the result will truly represent the wishes of all employees who are affected by the outcome.”

The vote is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010 from 8:30 am to 11am and 2 pm to 4:30 pm in the John Deutsch University Centre (McLaughlin Room, 3rd Floor), 87 Union Street.

If you have questions regarding the process, please contact Patti Evaristo, patti.evaristo@queensu.ca, Manager, Employee Relations, Human Resources Department.
