Provincial election campaign underway

2011-09-07

Ontarians will go to the polls on October 6 and Principal Daniel Woolf encourages all members of the Queen’s community to learn more about the local candidates and their party platforms.

“I invite all members of the Queen’s community to engage with the issues during this election campaign and cast an informed vote on October 6,” he says. “The Government of Ontario is our most important funding partner and I’m pleased that all parties recognize the value of post-secondary education to society and our economy.”

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) will be actively encouraging students to get informed and vote in this election.

"Voting in the provincial election is an important way to show politicians that young Canadians are engaged, so we hope to see student turnout improve," says Mira Dineen, AMS Academic Affairs Commissioner. "It’s a high priority because the provincial government makes decisions that affect all students, including setting tuition fees, teaching quality, and financial aid."

The AMS will be inviting local candidates to participate in an on-campus debate on September 19, and will be distributing information about voter registration and polling information during the campaign period.

The Society of Graduate and Professional students will also be active on campus up until election day with a campaign called SGPS Votes, making sure that students know where and how to vote, and helping to identify key issues for graduate students.

An advance poll will be available in the John Deutsch University Centre from September 21 to 23 allowing students, faculty, and staff convenient access to voter registration and a polling station. Queen’s students from Ontario are permitted to vote for a candidate in either Kingston and the Islands or their home electoral district.

Elections Ontario provides comprehensive information on who can vote, when, and how on their website at wemakevotingeasy.ca, on Facebook, and Twitter.
