More than 90 guests gathered at the Holiday Inn Kingston Waterfront for the third annual Principal’s Community Breakfast.

The event, hosted by Principal Daniel Woolf, provides an opportunity for leaders from government, business, not-for-profit organizations and other community groups to mingle over breakfast.

“Community leaders in this city provide our students with vital research opportunities, work placements and important mentorships,” says Principal Woolf. “It’s such a pleasure to be able to come together with them to acknowledge the opportunities we share.”

Six student speakers highlighted their research, business ventures and volunteer work in the community based on this year’s theme – putting ideas to work: student imagination, innovation and initiative.

The student speakers were Troy Sherman, third-year undergraduate and Municipal Affairs Commissioner with the Alma Mater Society; Paul Webster, a recent PhD graduate and winner of the Martin Walmsley Fellowship Award for Technological Entrepreneurship; Marin McLeod, an athlete and volunteer; Blake Sedore, an Master’s student in Mechanical and Materials Engineering; and Isabel Barrera and Irfan Sharif, two members of the team behind Moja Labs, a new company that is developing a mobile platform to make it easier for travellers to explore a city’s attractions.

The breakfast was held in conjunction with an initiative called “Open Doors, Open Knowledge” organized by the Association of Universities and Colleges Canada. From November 9 to 18, Canadian universities are opening their doors to showcase how university and private-sector partnerships are driving innovation in Canada. The AUCC’s vice-president, Christine Tausig Ford, was in attendance and also addressed the crowd.
