Police, rain dampen weekend street party
2009-09-28
A heavy police presence and steady rain kept crowds off Aberdeen Street on Saturday night.
An estimated 2,000 people gathered around the student village over the course of the evening but by 1am, the sidewalks were almost deserted.
“It’s encouraging that the number of people who came out was considerably less than in past year, and so were the issues police faced,” said Vice-Principal (Academic) Patrick Deane.
There were approximately 80 arrests, mostly for public drunkenness. Police also responded to several noise complaints. There were no serious injuries reported.
Homecoming has been cancelled for two years due to safety concerns with past parties on Aberdeen. The decision will be reviewed late next year.
