Memorial Service planned for 20th Anniversary of Montreal Massacre
On Sunday, December 6, members of the Queen’s community will come together to remember the 14 young women killed at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique twenty years ago.
A memorial evening starting at 6 pm with a service in Wallace Hall in the John Deutsch University Centre will mark Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
“We need to be reminded that violence against women remains a pervasive issue,” says Michelle LaMarche, Community Education Coordinator of Kingston Interval House and one of the organizers of the memorial. “The event gives voice to and honours the women who have been killed, both during the Montreal Massacre and in the years since, and encourages us to participate in the prevention and eradication of violence by sharing some very real and concrete ways of doing so.”
The Wallace Hall service will be followed by a 6:30 pm Candlelight Vigil from Wallace Hall to Macdonald Hall. Viewing of the film Film Polytechnique and a panel discussion will follow.
