Queen’s University is receiving $750,000 from the federal government to help small- and medium-sized businesses in southern Ontario bring promising new products to the marketplace faster.

“We are delighted with the recognition and opportunity that the federal government has provided in the award to Queen’s University,” says Vice-Principal (Research) Steven Liss. “The initiative builds on our research strengths and creates opportunities to address unique and innovative challenges and fosters the interface and growing relationships between small- and medium-sized businesses and the Queen’s research community including our faculty, students and staff.”

The money is enough to fund approximately 15 research and commercialization projects at the university.

“It’s a new funding opportunity for researchers that we never had before,” says Janice Mady, director of Queen’s Innovation Park and Industry Partnerships.. “This money will start to build collaborations with small- to medium-size businesses that we hope will grow into mutually-beneficial, long-term research collaborations.”

The announcement, part of the federal government’s $15-million Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative, was made at Innovation Park today by the Honourable John Baird and Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown.

St. Lawrence College will receive $154,993 under the same program.

The Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative is a part of FedDev Ontario and was created as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan to support businesses and communities in southern Ontario.
