Law lounge revamped with support from students, donors
Shoalts and Zaback Architects designed the renovation of the law student lounge located in Sir John A. Macdonald Hall.Law students will enjoy a more inviting and appealing lounge when they return to classes this fall.
“The Faculty of Law is well known for its collegial atmosphere, and the student lounge really is a central part of that experience,” says Rob Thomson (Law’13), President, Law Students’ Society (LSS). “The renovations will ensure the student lounge continues to be a comfortable environment for students to work, relax and socialize together.”
The student lounge will remain a flexible space where the Faculty of Law can host various functions including receptions and award presentations. Construction is currently underway and the lounge is expected to reopen to students by the beginning of September.
Shoalts and Zaback Architects have designed the renovation to make better use of the existing space. The design shows a smaller, more modern kitchen, revamped study areas with a fireplace, and a media centre with a television and space for students to post events and other information.
“The student lounge is a centre of student activity at the law school, fondly remembered by generations of law students,” says Law dean Bill Flanagan. “I know our alumni are thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to a project that will have such a major positive impact on student life at the Faculty of Law.”
LSS contributed $20,000 in surplus funds to the project, and the Queen’s Law Fund covered the remaining cost of the project.
