Food service contractors chosen

Sodexo and Brown’s Fine Foods have been awarded new food services contracts and will provide food services across campus for the next decade. The decision by the Food Service Review Committee comes after a two-and-a-half year review.

“It was a rigorous but revealing process,” says Bruce Griffiths, Director of Housing & Hospitality Services. “We connected with a wide range of customers on campus. The information we gathered was vital to the evaluation process.”

The committee was comprised of University administrators and students. In October 2007, it was given a mandate to review vendor submissions for dining hall meal plans, retail food services, catering and bar services. The current Brown’s and Sodexo contracts expire on June 30.

Committee members visited other campuses, conducted interviews, surveys and focus groups, and pored through detailed submissions from four proponents.

Commerce student and committee member Lorne Kalmar says the review was very thorough and very educational. “I was involved in every part of the process, including all decision-making,” he says. “The Review gave me the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to a real-life situation.”

Music student Matt Mills joined the committee believing he knew quite a bit about the food services industry, but quickly discovered that his knowledge only scratched the surface. “Looking back, I’m amazed at how much I didn’t know, and how much I’ve learned,” he says.

Sodexo serves 10 million customers across North America and has been providing services to Queen’s since 1975. The company has recently worked with Housing & Hospitality Services to develop a number of initiatives, including the popular Field to Fork events featuring Michael Smith and $5 Fridays in the dining halls for faculty and staff.

Brown’s is a privately-owned Kingston business that has been providing food and vending services to Queen’s since 1970. It will continue to operate the Tim Horton’s in Biosciences and the Market Street Café in Botterell Hall.

Mr. Griffiths is grateful to the review committee and members of the campus community who provided valuable feedback. “We’re looking forward to working with Sodexo and Brown’s to respond to the review feedback and to continue creating new food ideas on campus.”

The next stage of the process is the negotiation of the contacts, which are worth $150 million over 10 years.
