Flags lowered for Curator Emeritus Frances Smith
Flags on campus are lowered in memory of Frances Smith, the first curator of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
Ms Smith moved to Canada in 1944 with her husband Walter MacFarlane Smith and settled in Quebec City. In 1946, they moved to Kingston. Ms Smith completed her degree at Queen’s in 1956. The following year, she began her career at the newly opened Agnes Etherington Art Centre. She spent the next 23 years helping to build up the permanent art collection, researching and cataloguing all the art work at Queen’s, planning exhibitions, pursuing funds and publishing numerous articles. She retired as curator emeritus in 1980.
The funeral service will be held in Kingston on April 13 at 10:30 am at St. James Church (10 Union Street) with a reception to follow. Condolences may be forwarded through Cochrane Country Funeral Home.
