Final academic plan is posted


After many revisions and almost two years of widespread community consultation, a final version of the university’s academic plan is now posted on the website of the Senate Academic Planning Task Force. The plan goes to Senate for approval at its November meeting.

Members of the task force say they are excited to finally see their labours realized. After months of intensive discussion and collaboration, their message to the Queen’s community is simply: “Read the plan!”

Supported by four core pillars (The Student Learning Experience; Disciplinarity and Interdisciplinarity; Reaching Beyond: Globalism, Diversity and Inclusion at Queen’s; and Health, Wellness and Community), the plan defines eight guiding principles for the university and six principles concerning the academic planning process.

The plan builds on the ideas, priorities and directions put forward in Principal Woolf’s 2009 vision document, Where Next, and discussed and expanded in the Academic Writing Team’s report, Imagining the Future.

 What it doesn’t do is seek to impose particular practices. Because of this, the plan no longer includes a separate listing of 89 recommendations. (Instead, key recommendations are summarized for each pillar.) As well, the role of undergraduate teaching assistants and discussions of blended learning have been removed.

Over the past 10 months, the task force has held more than 40 sessions with the university community – from one-on-one sessions to unit and group meetings, faculty boards and town halls. Task force members also responded on-line to comments about their drafts on the interactive website.
