A proposed policy framework for the security of electronic information is now available for comment by the university community.

“The proposed policy framework brings together policies and supporting materials related to the security of the university’s information technology and resources, as well as the privacy of sensitive information in the university’s care,” says University Secretary Lon Knox.

The policies contained within the framework were developed over several years with input from the Queen’s Security Community of Practice and the former Senate Information Technology Committee. The Enterprise Information Technology Advisory Committee, research ethics boards and numerous stakeholders across campus have reviewed the drafts.

“ITServices continues to strengthen the security of the Queen’s infrastructure, but every member of the Queen’s community has a responsibility to be aware of security risks. The proposed policy framework establishes with whom this responsibility rests, and the procedures, standards and guidelines for carrying out that duty,” says Bo Wandschneider, Chief Information Officer and Associate Vice-Principal (Information Technology).

The proposed policy framework is posted on the University Secretariat website. Members of the Queen’s community can send comments by email no later than May 15.

Once the policy framework is approved, ITServices and information technology representatives in the faculties and departments will continue developing programs and support materials to help people fulfill their responsibilities under the policies.
