'Father' of environmental justice named Robert Sutherland Visitor

Robert Bullard's latest book "Race, Place and Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina" is the subject of the public lecture he will deliver while at Queen's.

A renowned environmental justice leader is this year’s Robert Sutherland Visitor.

Robert Bullard, a professor at Clark Atlanta University, has written 15 books that address many issues including sustainable development, environmental racism, and urban land use. His latest book, Race, Place and Environmental Justice after Hurricane Katrina, is the subject of the public lecture he will deliver during his visit to Queen’s.

“When I first encountered Bob Bullard 10 years ago, he spoke both clearly with a voice of genuine research experience and with a passion that came from this research being rooted in purpose. In short, he was an inspiration,” says Queen’s professor David Murakami Wood, who nominated Dr. Bullard for the visitorship.

Dr. Bullard will also participate in a faculty and graduate student forum and an environmental justice and community engagement workshop during his visit.

“I thought we needed the same kind of inspiration that I felt 10 years ago, a revitalization of the linkages that need to be made, and a reinvigoration of the sense of purpose that I believe should drive what we do as academics,” says Dr. Murakami Wood.

The Robert Sutherland Visitorship was established in 1997 by the John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC). The visitorship brings to campus a noted speaker with expertise in the areas of equity, community diversity and race relations.

Dr. Bullard will give his public lecture March 7 from 7-9 pm at Robert Sutherland Hall Room 202. The faculty and graduate student forum will take place 2-4 pm at the JDUC graduate lounge. The workshop will occur March 9 from 10 am until 3:30 pm at the Lower Ban Righ Dining Hall at 10 Bader Lane. If you are interested in attending the workshop, please email Melissa Gunton.
