Career Services helps students get SWEP'd away this summer
A lunchtime program returns to Career Services this summer to help Queen’s Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP) students get more from their summer jobs on campus.
The ongoing summer Lunch ‘n Learn program connects SWEP students and provides a chance for them to reflect on what they learn on the job. The interactive, informal sessions take place once each month during the summer and are an opportunity to develop the career skills students will need upon completion of their degrees.
“We want to make sure that SWEP is a meaningful part of the career experience,” says Cathy Keates, Director, Career Services. “These are additional learning opportunities that add to the important experiences in the employment itself.”
Four sessions over the summer cover a variety of topics related to careers and the job search. Participants have the opportunity to network with other SWEP students and discuss future entrepreneurial opportunities. Résumé and CV sessions will teach students how to directly apply their summer employment to other applications for jobs and graduate study.
“I find the Lunch ‘n Learn sessions beneficial because they emphasize that there are many general skills in each of the SWEP jobs that can be applied to future careers, even if you end up in a different field,” says Nicola Johnson (Artsci ’14).
Lunch ‘n Learn is not a required program, but students who participate should come away from the sessions with an idea of how to make their SWEP experience work for them in the future.
SWEP students can sign up for the hour-long, lunchtime sessions on the Career Services calendar.
