Banner weekend for Gaels volleyball teams
The Queen’s men’s and women’s volleyball teams captured Ontario University Athletics (OUA) titles over the weekend.
The men’s squad advanced to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship, which takes place this weekend at Queen’s, by defeating the Western Mustangs in the OUA championship final. The Gaels rallied to defeat the Mustangs in five sets after falling behind two sets to one. Joren Zeeman, the most valuable player of the OUA championship, helped lead Queen’s to the victory.
“Joren Zeeman certainly stepped up when it mattered and having Niko Rukavina back in power also made us more three dimensional. I have to give credit to the Western Mustangs, as they played a great match and made it very tough for us,” says Brenda Willis, head coach of the men’s team.
The women’s team beat the Ottawa Gee-Gees in four sets to win the OUA championship.
“It was a fantastic tournament, a fantastic win,” said Gaels coach Joely Christian-Macfarlane. “We started the season with the idea that we were just going to play the best volleyball we could play match after match and we found a way to do that so when we got to the final we could play the best match of the year.”
The women’s volleyball team will compete for a CIS title at McMaster University in Hamilton March 2-4. Visit the Queen’s Gaels website throughout the weekend for updates.
