GERALD RICHARDSON BROWN, Sc'57, has written Road to Ganneious (Conundrum Press, $20) a historical fiction that follows several generations of one Canadian family as they make their way from the mountains of Austria to Hay Bay on the shores of Lake Ontario. Gerald is a professor emeritus of civil engineering at UBC, where he taught for 25 years. Following retirement he became interested in his roots and the pre-Confederation history of Canada.
LAURA CAMERON and AUDREY KOBAYASHI have co-authored, along with Andrew Baldwin from Durham University, Rethinking the Great White North (UBC Press, $34.95). This book not only reassesses Canadian history and identity, it offers a vocabulary for thinking about whiteness, nature, and nation as Canada enters into new debates about the North and the meaning of the nation. Laura is an associate professor of geography and Canada Research Chair in Historical Geographies of Nature at Queen's. Audrey Kobayashi is a professor of geography and Queen's Research Chair.
WILL KYMLICKA, Artsci'84, has co-authored Rooted Cosmopolitanism (UBC Press, $85), which examines how Canada has negotiated its relations to "the world" both within and beyond its own borders, and evaluates the possibility of reconciling local ties and nationalism with commitments to human rights, global justice, and international law. Will is the Canada Research Chair in Political Philosophy at Queen's.
RACHEL LAFOREST, an associate professor and head of the Public Policy and Third Sector Initiative in the School of Policy Studies at Queen's, has written Voluntary Sector Organizations and the State (UBC Press, $85), an account of how a loose coalition of Canadian voluntary organizations was transformed into a distinct sector that offers a new conceptual framework for explaining dynamic state-voluntary sector relations at all levels of government.
