Juancho Collera

Juancho Collera Professor of Mathematics,
University of the Philippines Baguio

What led me to Queen’s was the dissertation topic that I pursued. Little did I know that I’m into the best adventure of my life that opened so many doors of opportunity.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provided me with both the academic training and support to finish my PhD. I learned a lot from the courses, the interactions with the professors, and the countless seminar talks of experts from all around the globe. I was also given a chance to become a teaching fellow. Everyone in the department is so helpful and nurturing. I would not have succeeded without the encouragement and patience of my thesis supervisors. This environment and the opportunities to connect with excellent researchers and academics have helped me grow to my full potential.

"The Queen’s campus is beautiful, and the university provides facilities and programs that helped me during my graduate studies."
Juancho Collera

The Queen’s campus is beautiful, and the university provides facilities and programs that helped me during my graduate studies. The international centre, in particular, offers workshops that assist foreign students like me. They also provide information about on-campus work and bursaries to name a few. The university libraries have a large collection of graduate mathematics textbooks and access to online resources necessary for graduate research.

The City of Kingston is peaceful and friendly. I remember the family that volunteered to host me during my first week in Kingston until I found a place of my own, and the many compassionate and kind people that I met during my stay. I couldn't ask for a more perfect place and community to do a doctoral degree.

After graduation, I returned to the Philippines bringing not only the knowledge and training I
got but also the eagerness to pay it forward the Queen’s U style.
