SPSS Version 21 Installation and Licensing Information

Beginning November 1st, SPSS users at Queen's will get warnings that their program will stop working. As SPSS has released version 21, the decision was made to move to the new version - 21 - at the same time as updating to a new license code. The new version can be installed from CD or through Ida. The installation via Ida will be described first - scroll down to see the instructions for CD.

Installation using Ida

Overview
You need to install Ida (if you haven't already), tell Ida who you are (NetID and password), and ask it to install IBM SPSS Statistics (formerly PASW/SPSS/SPSS Statistics) for you. Ida tries to automate the job but it takes a while because it involves uninstalling any old versions of SPSS Statistics, installing IBM SPSS Statistics version 21 and completing the license wizard. In some cases you may need to restart your computer partway through all that. If so, Ida will prompt you accordingly and will continue the install once it is restarted after the computer restarts.

  1. Install the latest version of Ida  (if you haven't already - if so skip to step 3)

Go to the Ida web page at  http://www.queensu.ca/its/software/ida.html and download the setup and run it. This part isn't automated but you just have to click Next a few times to complete the task. Ida will automatically start at the end of the setup.

  2. Tell Ida Who You Are

When Ida starts up a balloon will appear popping out of the Ida icon in the system tray (usually the lower right corner of the screen).  Click on it to open the Task Manager (if you miss that balloon, right-click the Ida icon in the system tray and select Task Manager).  The first time the Task Manager opens it presents an initial list of recommendations, a Check Server and an Identification task.  If you have already installed Ida, you may still need to get it to check the server to retrieve the information that the update to IBM SPSS Statistics 21 is available - select Check Server from the right-click menu of the Ida icon in the system tray.

    1. Select the Identification check box.
    2. Click Submit
    3. Type your Queen's NetID and password when prompted

Ida will confirm your credentials with the server and acquire recommendations based on your NetID. At the end of the process you will see the Ida Results Manager. When you close that, Ida will show the balloon tip on its tray icon again. Click on that to reopen the Ida Task Manager. It should have the install of IBM SPSS Statistics 21 in its list.  If it does not appear, please contact the ITServices General Office at 613.533.2244 or by email (at g13-l@lists.queensu.ca) to confirm your license renewal has been processed.  Note: if the PC is running a 64 bit operating system you will need to request a license for the 64 bit version of the software - but this will run on Vista or Windows 7 only - not XP.  Please specify 64-bit on the renewal application.  If you are not sure whether your operating system is 32 or 64 bit, look at the System settings (Control Panel > System).  If your system is 64 bit

    • XP - x64 will appear in the name: "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" - Note - IBM SPSS Statistics 21 is not supported on 64 bit XP
    • Vista Or Windows 7 look at the System Type where it will say "64-bit Operating System"
    For more details see  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218

  3. Tell Ida to Update SPSS

We're going to compose a second job that contains just the tasks needed to update SPSS:

    1. Clear all the check boxes in the left column of the Ida Task Manager so we're at the same starting point
    2. Select the Uninstall IBM SPSS Statistics 20 check box. (There won't be one if this is a fresh install.)
    3. Select the Install IBM SPSS Statistics 21 check box.
    4. Click Submit
    5. Ida may prompt for your netid and password as SPSS is restricted software.  If you have recently entered your netid and password, Ida will remember that you already entered it.
    6. Ida will prompt you to accept the license agreement. Select "I agree to the terms".

At this point you can sit back and watch Ida do its thing. The Ida Job Manager will display in the upper right corner of your screen to display progress and instructions. Ida will download IBM SPSS Statistics 21 before it uninstalls version 20. (Ida wants to be sure it can get the new version before removing the old version.)

Some computers require a restart at the end of the SPSS install. If so, Ida will display the Results Manager here and prompt you to restart. When Windows restarts it will resume installing SPSS. (On XP, Ida automatically restarts when Windows comes up. On Vista and Windows 7 with UAC turned on, you have to click on a big Launch Ida button)

  4. Complete the License Wizard

After Ida installs IBM SPSS Statistics it launches the SPSS License Wizard.  Ida will attempt to complete the License Wizard automatically. If it fails, it is possible to try the license step again using an Ida tweak or to license via e-mail. To try the license via email option follow the prompts when the internet license step fails.  Or contact the ITServices General Office at 613.533.2244 or by email (at g13-l@lists.queensu.ca) for access to the tweak.

  5. Ida is done

When the SPSS Licensing Wizard closes, Ida will display the Results Manager. With luck you'll have a happy green check mark beside each task. Select a task to view significant details. The Install IBM SPSS Statistics 21 details will include information about your license: the new expiration date will be October 31, 2013. When you close the Results Manager Ida will show its Recommendations balloon tip if it thinks you should update other programs. If this was your first time using Ida that will likely include a recommendation to update or install Symantec Endpoint Protection. Click on the balloon tip to see what Ida recommends and submit those tasks you agree with.

  6. What if things go wrong?

Take a look at the FAQs.  If that doesn't help, call the Support Centre at 36666 or send e-mail to ida at queensu.ca (replace at with the @ sign)

Installation using borrowed CDs

Once you sign and submit the license agreement, you will be notified when the IBM SPSS 21 CD binder is available. This binder will include the following:

  • An SPSS program CD to install the software.
  • An authorization code. A serial number is no longer required to install the SPSS software.

The Authorization Code is provided so that you may license a copy of the SPSS 21 software for your machine. The authorization code is not a license. It simply authorizes or permits you to obtain a license for your copy of the software from SPSS via the Internet. Note: This means that ITServices is unable to provide you with a license or license your copy of SPSS 21 for you.

What you need to know about SPSS 21 licenses

  • Licenses are tied to your computer's hardware with a lock code. If you replace your computer or its hardware, the SPSS software will no longer function because your machine's lock code will have changed. You will need to repeat the authorization process to license your copy of SPSS software.
  • SPSS software licenses are linked to your computer's system clock at the time of installation and are therefore highly sensitive to time changes of your computer clock. If you change the system time on your computer, the product may stop functioning. SPSS technical support will need the lock code of your computer in order to generate a new license for your computer. Please ensure that your computer's date and time are set correctly before you install SPSS software.
  • To install SPSS software, you must be logged on to your computer with administrator privileges.
