Packman FAQs

  • Q. Packman says, “connection to server timed out” or gives me an error.

    It is possible that the server is simply busy or your internet is down.


    The easiest way to verify that your internet is working is to open up your web browser and go to a web page you don’t commonly visit. If it turns out your internet is down, please contact your Internet Service Provider. If the Packman server is just busy, wait for a few hours then try again.


    If you have Packman already installed on your computer:


    • Go to Packman Launch Pad
    • Choose 02 Check Server

    This will check the version of Packman installed on your computer and allow you to update it if you are running an outdated version. You should always have the latest version of Packman.

  • Q. Why do I get privilege errors when I install Packman on WinXP?

    Ensure that Packman is installed while logged into an administrator account.


    If you are using a computer running Windows XP that is configured for multiple users, then it is important to ensure that Packman is installed while logged into an administrator account. If you are getting privilege errors, then it is likely that you do not have sufficient access privileges in order to install Packman.

  • Q. What are the hardware/software requirements for Packman to run?

    The Packman software itself can be installed on any computer running an operating system newer than and including Windows 95 up to Windows XP.

  • Q. Packman won’t download a certain package, why?

    You must be a Queen's student, staff or faculty member, with a valid Qlink or Post account, to download some software from Packman.

    You may be trying to install software that requires special registration (permission or license) to use. If you require permisssion to download or a licence for the software, Packman will open a dialogue box telling you the requirements. Make sure you have the requirements before you try to download the software, otherwise Packman will refuse to download the package.

  • Q. What login and password do I use when Packman prompts me to download a piece of software?

    Your NetID and your NetID password.

  • Q. I can’t install QWS3270, or other “licensed” software. Why?

    If the package requires a signed license, a valid account is necessary, but not sufficient.


    The procedure to obtain such a license is package specific and presented before Packman displays the login screen.


    You must contact the appropriate person in order to inquire about registering for the licensed software
