After you have installed Ida the first time, Ida should start up and open the Task Manager with an Identification task and a Check Server. Click Submit and Ida will prompt you for your netid and will check its server for the latest data on applications it can install. It will also check if it has specific recommendations for you - e.g. if you have a license for restricted software.
When Ida is running, you will see the red 'Ida' icon i in the notification area of the Taskbar.
Double-clicking this icon opens the Application Manager which allows users to access their applications. For more information on the Application Manager, see the Application Manager section of the tutorial.
In order to install an application, select the Task Manager from the View menu of the Application Manager or off the right-click menu for the Ida icon in the notification area of the Taskbar or click on the yellow balloon that says Ida has recommendations. For more information on installing applications, see the Task Manager section of the tutorial.
Periodically Ida will check with its server to update its data - if new versions of software have been released or if you have been assigned access to restricted software. If you want to force Ida to check with the server, select Check Server off the right-click menu for the Ida icon in the Taskbar or off the View menu of the Application Manager or the Task Manager.
Sometimes Ida is used by one user to install software for another. In order to tell Ida to forget the identity of the first user and configure it for the user of the PC, open the Preferences window (off the right-click menu for the Ida icon in the notification area of the Taskbar or off the View menu of the Application Manager or the Task Manager. Then click on the Forget Identity button under the Identity tab and Apply the change. The next time the Task Manager is opened it should have an Identification task which when submitted will prompt for the new netid.
When Ida starts up on a Vista or Windows 7 PC with UAC it will display a Launch Ida window. Click on the button to allow Ida to run.
Some users may not want Ida to run all the time and may just want to start it when they want to install software. To configure Ida not to launch when Windows starts open the Preferences window as above and click on the Advanced tab. Then uncheck the box next to Automatically launch Ida when Windows starts and click to Apply the change. Or when you see the Launch Ida window, uncheck the box in that window next to Automatically launch Ida when Windows starts.
If Ida has a problem, the Ida Trouble Report may appear on your screen. We would appreciate it if you would enter comments about what was happening when the trouble report appeared (had you requested an install, what software) and that you confirm your contact information and then Submit the report. If you have a problem with Ida and would like to contact us, you can ask Ida to create a Trouble report by selecting Trouble Report off the right-click menu of the Ida icon in the Task Bar, or by selecting it off the Help menu in the Application Manager or the Task Manager.
