Queen's has a Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 8.1 Enterprise site license for staff, faculty and grad students. If your computer's operating system needs to be updated to one of these encryption enabled versions, your computer files will need to be backed up, the OS reinstalled and a reinstall of your applications will be necessary.
If the machine does not have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) in Windows 7 Enterprise, a USB key is required to encrypt your computer. If it is using Windows 8.1 Enterprise, a PIN or USB key is required to encrypt without a TPM. Storage of the encryption Recovery Key is very important and should be printed and stored in a locked location.
