Configure Windows 8.1 for Wireless Connection

 

 


 

 

Connecting to a Wireless Network

 

  1. When you turn your computer on your will see the Windows 8.1 Start screen
    • Click the Desktop icon

  2. The Windows 8.1 desktop will open
    • From the System Tray (In the lower right corner) select the Wireless icon

  3. The Networks screen will open
    • Select the QueensSecure_WPA2 wireless network
    • Check the box beside Connect automatically
    • Click the Connect button

  4. A security screen may open
    • Click the Connect button

  5. The Wireless connection will be made
    • You will see the "bars" and the word Connected will be displayed
    • Once you are connect, you will stay connected.
    • When you system is re-started you will automatically re-connect to the network
    • You're Done!

Delete a Wireless Network

 

If the above method fails then you will need to create the connection manually.  First you will need to remove the existing QueensuSecure_WPA2 profile (if it was already created).

 

  1. Start from the Windows Start Screen
    • Type cmd

  2. The Search menu will open on the side of the screen
    • cmd will be in the search field
    • From the Search results right click on Command Prompt

  3. The choices menu will open
    • Select Run as administrator

  4. The User Account Control screen may open
    • Click the Yes button

  5. The Administrator:  Command Prompt screen will open
    • The path C:\Windows\system32> will be displayed
    • enter netsh wlan show profiles

  6. The Administrator: Command Prompt screen will update to show all the wireless profiles
    • To delete the QueensuSecure_WPA2 profile type:  netsh wlan delete profile name="QueensuSecure_WPA2"
    • If you wish to delete all network profiles type:  netsh wlan delete profile name=* i=*

  7. The Administrator: Command Prompt screen will update
    • Confirmation that the wireless network has been deleted will be displayed
    • Close the Administrator: Command Prompt screen

Manually Configure a Wireless Network Profile

 

 

  1. Begin at the Window 8.1 Start Screen
    • Click the Desktop icon

  2. The Desktop screen will open
    • Open the menu by moving your mouse to the top right or bottom right of the screen 
    • From the menu select Settings

  3. The Settings screen will open
    • Select Control Panel

  4. The Control Panel will be displayed
    • You may need to change the View by status to Large icons
    • Select Network and Sharing Center

  5. The Network and Sharing Center will be displayed
    • Select Set up a new connection or network

  6. The Set Up a Connection or Network will be displayed 
    • select Manually connect to a wireless network

  7. The Manually connect to a wireless network screen will open
    • In the Network name: field enter QueensuSecure_WPA2
    • From the Security type: drop down menu select WPA2-Enterprise
    • From the Encryption Type: drop down menu select AES
    • Check the box beside Start this connection automatically
    • Click the Next button

  8. The Manually connect to a wireless network screen will re-open
    • The message Successfully added QueensuSecure_WPA2 will be displayed
    • Select Change connection settings

  9. The QueensuSecure_WPA2 Wireless Network Properties screen will open
    • Click the Security tab
    • From the Choose a network authentication method: select Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • Click the Settings button

  10. The Protected EAP Properties screen will open
    • Remove the check mark from the Verify the server's identity by validating the certificate check box
    • From the  Select Authentication Method: drop down menu  select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
    • Check the box beside Enable Fast Reconnect
    • Click the Configure... button

  11. The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties screen will open
    • Remove the check mark from Automatically use my Windows Logon name and password (and domain if any).
    • Click OK to close the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties screen
    • Click OK again to close the Protected EAP Properties screen

  12. The QueensuSecure_WPA2 Wireless Network Properties screen will re-open
    • Click the Advanced settings button

  13. The Advanced settings screen will open
    • Check the box beside Specify authentication mode:
    • From the drop down menu select User authentication
    • Click the Save credentials button

  14. The Windows Security screen will open
    • In the User name field enter your NetID
    • in the Password field enter your NetID's password
    • Click the Ok button to close the Windows Security screen
    • Click the Ok button to close the Advanced settings screen
    • Click the OK button to close the QueensuSecure_WPA2 Wireless Network Properties screen
    • Close the Control Panel

  15. Connect to the wireless network by clicking the wireless icon button in the system tray method2-sixteen.png
