Limiting Your Backup Data Files

If, after eliminating the unused filespaces, there is still an excess of data being backed up, it may be necessary to examine the hard drive and determine what data can be excluded from the backup process. To examine the hard drive:

Windows

  1. Launch Windows Explorer by opening theC drive from My Computer
  2. The folders on the C drive will display:
Note: The displayed format may be either Large Icon, Small Icon, List or Detail, depending on the system settings. The example below is in Detail format.

  3. Determine the amount of data in each folder by positioning the cursor over the folder and click the right mouse button.
  4. From the displayed menu, left-click on Properties: In the example below, the folder old Program Files contain 7,688 files occupying 794 MB:

    Folder Properties
  5. Make a note of large folders that do not need to be backed up.
    • In most cases, the items in the folder Program Files can be recreated by re-installing the programs.
    • Windows or WinNT can usually be excluded from backup as well.
    • One exception would be the Desktop files.
  6. After it has been determined what folders can be excluded from backup, the Include/Exclude list in TSM can be configured.

Mac OS X

  1. Switch to the Finder, and open Finder window if needed.
  2. Mac OS X has some default top level folder structures (/Application, /Developer, /Library, /System, /Users):

  5. Make a note of large folders that do not need to be backed up. In most cases, the items in the folders /System/, /Developer/ and /Applications/ can be recreated from the original program CD or download from Internet.
  6. After it has been determined what folders can be excluded from backup, the Include/Exclude list in TSM can be configured.
