Single Sign-On (SSO) is a form of authentication (logging in) that uses your NetID and password. When you log in to one SSO application, you are logging in to all SSO applications to which you have access. For example, if you log in to Queen's webmail, you are also logging in to the MyQueensU portal. Thus, if you go to my.queensu.ca after logging in to webmail, you will notice that you are already logged in to the portal.
Single Sign-On provides the convenience of being able to log into multiple applications by entering your credentials (NetID and password) only once. However, there are certain impacts of SSO that you should be aware of.
When you log out of one SSO application, you will be logging out of all of them. Using the example above, if you have tabs in your browser open for both webmail and MyQueensU, logging out of one of them will also terminate your session for the other one.
To close one SSO application without terminating the session of another one, close the tab or window for that application but do not log out of the application itself.
For security purposes, when you no longer wish to have any SSO applications open, make sure to log out of at least one SSO application as well as closing your browser tab or window.
If you are logged in to an SSO application but do not do anything within it for 30 minutes, you will be logged out of your SSO session. You will lose any work you have not saved if you encounter an idle timeout.
If you are logged in to an SSO application, you will be asked to reauthenticate (re-enter your NetID and password) after four hours of activity. You will lose any work you have not saved if you encounter a session timeout.
