Artist's Statement

My own practice tends to focus on ideas of personal reflection and identity. The Woman Recreated Project opened up thoughts of identity on a collective level, and the characteristics of the identity of Women in general. The square that I was given to recreate was a section of hair. I thought about hair as a physical attribute, what it means to women all over the world, and what we do with it. I also thought about skills, knowledge and work, passed down over generations. Weaving any material changes it, makes it stronger, creates new function and significance. Woven material is used and created by women all over the world. It is used to produce and to sustain. For me, this abstracted weave represents progression. The continual progression of women, all we have achieved and have yet to.
