Reminders – Upcoming Dates Employee Benefits Plan

Thursday, September 3, 2020

Good morning,

On July 1, Manulife became the university’s benefits carrier for staff, faculty and retirees.  The transition included the introduction of new optional benefits and a pay direct drug card.  Many staff have taken advantage of the new benefits and the convenience of the pay direct drug card.

There are some upcoming key dates to keep in mind:

Claims for expenses prior to July 1, 2020

You have until September 30, 2020 to submit claims to our previous insurer, Canada Life, for the reimbursement of claims that occurred before July 1.  Only paper claims are accepted, Health and Dental claim forms can be found under the Group Claim forms page on the Canada Life website.

Generic drug substitution starts October 1, 2020

The generic drug substitution provision of the benefit plan takes effect on October 1, 2020.  Generic drug substitution means that after October 1, the drug cost automatically reimbursed by the benefit plan will be based on the lowest-price alternative medication, which is typically a “generic drug”.  After October 1, your drug card will cover the cost of the lowest-price alternative.  You can ask your doctor to complete a Request for Approval for Brand-name Drug Form and submit it directly to Manulife to apply for an exception.  Once approved, the drug card will cover the cost of the brand-name drug.

You can go to the generic drug substitution overview on the HR Manulife benefits launch for more details.

The Manulife online tool allows you to view your benefit coverages, submit claims online, and apply for coverage for the new optional benefits.  It is a secure and convenient way to manage your benefits.  If you have not already done so, go to the online tool to set up your plan member profile.  The Queen’s policy number is 120156

If you have questions about your coverage or need help navigating the online tool, you can contact the Manulife Customer Service Centre at 1-800-268-6195, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.  You can also send questions to benefits.project@queensu.ca.

Regards,

Steve
