Talk Title: Developing the Tools and Techniques of Space Exploration

Abstract: Space Exploration involves many different highly specialized tools whose usage are carefully considered prior to flight. This is particularly true of scientific instruments which must often find creative ways to deal with the severe limitations imposed by a flight mission while still making key measurements reliably and accurately. This talk will consider some of the science that motivates the development of the tools and techniques required for successful space science missions along with a few examples of their pathway towards flight.

Bio: Professor John Moores is the Research Chair in Space Exploration at York University in Toronto and the Science Advisor to the President of the Canadian Space Agency. His research, as described in nearly 100 peer-reviewed articles, aims to better understand atmospheric and volatile processes across our solar system and beyond. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists and is the recipient of the 2022 McCurdy Award by the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute. Over his career, he has served on 6 international space missions including as a participating scientist on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Mission, popularly known as the Curiosity Rover. Prior to his role with the Government of Canada he served as the Associate Dean of Research at the Lassonde School of Engineering.
