FAQs

How do I know what courses I need to take this year? How many electives do I need to take?
There are two places where you can view a current outline (course listings; program outline) for your program - for example Class of 2015.
By checking your program outline you will be able to determine if you need to take an elective and if so what kind and how many: http://engineering.queensu.ca/Calendar/2013-2014/Geological_Engineering_0.html. Then you can go to the ‘Calendar’ or ‘Degree Audits’ If you choose to go to the calendar please follow this path: Click on ‘2013-2014 Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Calendar’ Then, on the right hand side of the screen click on ‘degree programs’ ‘Geological Engineering’ Choose your year.
If you choose to use the Degree Audit, you can print the form and use it to track your program. These forms are updated yearly to allow for curriculum changes this means that you will need to complete a new one each year in case there are any curriculum changes (course that are deleted or added etc).
How do I fix my course registrations? I am a Transfer Student or I have been away on Internship or Exchange and I was not preloaded into the proper courses.
Students who have transferred in to Geological Engineering or who have been away on internship or exchange may have to adjust their course registrations.
These students are often block enrolled (preloaded) in to the wrong courses. Students should use SOLUS to drop the courses that they do not need and add the ones that they do need.
To access a list of the (core) courses specific to your year and your option see the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Calendar ‘degree programs’. You will see a list of courses that are common to all students in your year 'Common Core' and then you will see that there is a list of additional core courses that are specific to your program.
How do I register in conflicting courses?
Complete the Schedule Conflict Course Registration Form and it can be found: http://engineering.queensu.ca/Current-Students/files/ScheduleConflictCou... and then contact the instructors of each of the course and ask if she/he is willing to allow you to register in a course that is in conflict. This can be done in person or electronically.
Email the completed form along with the instructor’s permission (either as a signature on the form, or as an email) to Tina who will then give the form to the Undergraduate Chair for review. If they sign the form granting their approval, I will then register you in the course(s).
Do I need to register in an Elective or List A Complementary Studies course this year? How many? How do I know which courses to choose from? How do I register?
Students can register in Electives and List A Complementary Studies on SOLUS. It is best to register in these courses early (during your Enrollment Appointment) because they can fill up quickly.
How do I register in a first year course?
Upper year students who have to register in a First Year course should do so in September. Please complete a Course Registration Request Form (CRRF) which can be found on our GEOE Moodle advising site or at this link: http://engineering.queensu.ca/Current-Students/files/CourseRegistrationR...
Read the instructions at the bottom of the form, and then fill in the student area at the top of the form. Explain clearly why you believe it is necessary for you to add the course. Save the form to your computer in the following format: CRRFlastnamecoursenumber.docx (for example CRRFSmithMECH212.docx). You can also save it as a pdf file if you wish. Look at your timetable in SOLUS and print it to a file with the following name: TTlastname.pdf. Send the CRRF and a copy of your timetable to Micheline Johnston in Student Services Office, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. She will process the request and register you in the course.
You must email your CRRF and timetable from your queensu email address in order for it to be consider it an official request. Emails from hotmail, etc will not be considered. You may also print the CRRF and your timetable and bring it in to your department office in person. You can only use ONE CRRF form per request.
What do I do if I need to repeat a course?
If you have to repeat a course it is likely that you will need to drop a course in order to make room. Although you will use SOLUS to register in the course you are repeating, you are asked to contact the Undergraduate Chair in advance to discuss your options. Please send email to Larke Zarichny who will forward your information.
What happens if I am missing a prerequisite for a course?
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT MISSING PREREQUISITES: When the core courses are loaded into your timetable the block loading process overrides the prerequisite considerations. However this does not mean you are able to do the course if you have not passed a prerequisite. The Faculty does a prerequisite check in September, and if you are missing a prerequisite, you will be pulled out of the course. To avoid being pulled out of the course you must submit a Course Registration Request Form (CRRF) http://engineering.queensu.ca/Current-Students/files/CourseRegistrationRequestForm.pdf
This request must be approved otherwise you will not be able to remain in the course. This form can also be used to register in a course for which you are missing the prerequisite.
How do I get permission from an Instructor in order to register in a course? How do I register in the course once I get permission?
Complete an Academic Change form http://www.queensu.ca/registrar/aboutus/forms/UG_Academic_Change.pdf requesting to add the course. Have the instructor initial beside the course or submit an email from the instructor granting you permission to register in the course. Submit this to Larke Zarichny, Undergraduate Program Assistant for processing.
Can I register in a course that is full?
You may be able to register in a course that is full. Complete an Academic Change form found here: http://www.queensu.ca/registrar/aboutus/forms/UG_Academic_Change.pdf requesting to add the course. Contact the instructor to see if they will allow you register in the course even though it is full. Have the instructor initial beside the course or submit an email from the instructor granting you permission to register in the course. Submit this to Larke Zarichny, Undergraduate Program Assistant for processing. If you have difficulty contacting the instructor, please let Larke know.
What is the deadline for adding and dropping courses?
Beginning 1 September, students can add and drop courses on SOLUS. The Chair of Undergraduate Studies in the specific academic plan must be advised when a course is dropped. Verbal requests to course instructors and/or absence from class are not sufficient and usually result in failure and loss of fee refund. (2013-2014 academic year)   Adding 20 September Last date to add Fall Term courses and Fall-Winter courses. 17 January Last date to add Winter Term courses. Dropping Fall: 1 Sept Last date to obtain full refund ** 1 Nov. Last date to drop voluntarily Fall-Winter:1 Sept Last date to obtain full refund ** 17 Jan.
