UNDERGRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: RACHEL KIM

Hometown: Richmond Hill, Ontario

Program: Geological Engineering

Current year: Fourth year

Why I chose this program:  I chose Geological Engineering as my discipline because it appealed the most to my interests, both academic and extra-curricular. I found it to be a great opportunity to work in a field that has many different applications, which could lead to interesting careers and experiences in the future. After my first few classes in my second year courses, I realized that I had found something I wanted to do, and really enjoy doing. I definitely lucked out in that respect.

Student involvement/extracurricular activities I am involved with:

-Currently serving as Miller Club’s Treasurer for the 2013-2014 academic year
-Currently on my 3rd year volunteering with Queen’s First Aid as a responder and supervisor
-Currently an upper year volunteer with the Geo Help Centre
-Social Chair of ACERT’s MIXER 2013 Conference Organizing Committee
-Currently employed as part-time staff with the AMS’s P&CC and EngSoc’s Clark Hall Pub
-Currently employed by Queen’s University as a GEOL/GEOE 221 Teaching Assistant
-Volunteering as an Hours Logger for SciFormal 2013
-Actively participate in intramural sports (inner tube water polo, curling) throughout the school year.

The professor(s) or course which has influenced me the most:
All of my professors and courses have been interesting and I’ve learned so much from them. I would have to say Field Methods/School, Structural Geology, Engineering Geology, Resource Engineering, Igneous Petrology, and Petrology of Ore Deposits courses are the most influential during my time in the department. I’m currently in the midst of taking my fourth year design project and Geology of North America - I feel that I will have learned a lot from it by the end!

After I graduate, I: Would like to pursue further academics in a Master’s degree or begin a career in mineral exploration in Western/Northern Canada.

One big goal I’d like to accomplish during my lifetime: Work in/see as many different places as I can. But before that, graduate!
