Construction season is here, and spring and summer on Queen’s Kingston campus will see some starts and ends to several projects.  Here’s a snapshot:

The John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC)

Started: May 2022    Opens: August 2024

The John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC), located on the corner of University Avenue and Division Street, is a key hub for student life at Queen’s. It is home to the Alma Mater Society, the Society of Graduate and Professional Students, the Office of the Rector, the Student Experience Office (SEO), numerous student clubs, a pub, and a print and copy centre.

University Avenue at Union is currently closed to through-traffic between Union Street and Earl Street. The east sidewalk by the John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC) is also closed. Both are expected to re-open in July 2024.

Union Street is expected to close to all traffic between University Avenue and 5 Field Company Lane for three days in early May 2024 to allow crews to permanently tie the building back into local utilities.

The JDUC building is scheduled to re-open in August 2024.

Started: May 2022    Opens: September 2024

The 90-room residence in JDUC was renovated and will re-open to students for the start of the Fall 2024 semester.

Stauffer Library

Start: June 2024     Temporary Closure: June 8 – late August 2024

Expected Completion: January 2025

Queen’s is renovating the Joseph S. Stauffer Library’s main floor. This project - the first major renovation to Stauffer Library since it opened in 1994 - will enhance accessibility and create a more welcoming and modern space for patrons.

Stauffer Library will be closed to the public for eight to ten weeks, from June 8 to late August 2024. During the closure, the noisiest and most disruptive work (including core drilling and demolition) will be completed. Closing the library will help promote safety and allow work to proceed more quickly, thereby helping ensure that key areas, such as the Adaptive Technology Centre, will be open as early as possible in the fall term, and leading up to a full reopening of the main floor by early 2025.

Duncan McArthur Hall

Start: May 2024     Expected Completion: September 2025

Duncan McArthur Hall, located on the West Campus of Queen’s University, is home to the Faculty of Education.

The university will begin a redevelopment of Duncan McArthur Hall in May 2024. Work will include an expansion of the first floor into the space under the building overhang and renovation of the existing first floor of ‘A’ wing (east wing), parts of the second floor, and the “student street” that connects the two wings of the building.

Agnes Etherington Art Centre

Start: May 2024     Expected Completion: Summer 2026

Agnes’s current physical space closed effective March 29, 2024.  Construction is set to begin on May 13, 2024, with the new space scheduled to open in 2026. When construction begins, a section of Bader Lane is expected to close to through-traffic for the duration of the project.

The Agnes is home to The Bader Collection - the most comprehensive collection of authenticated paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn and his circle in any institution within Canada.

When complete, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre at Queen’s University will be the largest public university-affiliated museum in Canada. A new three-floor building will double the amount of current gallery space at the museum.
