Queen’s University’s Gillian Pegg claimed the bronze medal at the CIS national wrestling championship in St. Catharines on Saturday, defeating Carmella Fleurant from Brock University in the 82kg category.

After splitting her matches in the opening round robin – a win over Dana Campbell from Lakehead and falling to Kiera Prior from Saskatchewan – Pegg drew Carmella Fleurant from Brock who also had gone 1-1 in her round-robin pool.

Fleurant was no match for Pegg as the OUA gold medalist added a CIS bronze to her collection.

In the overall race, the Brock University men's and women's wrestling teams were crowned 2016 CIS National Champions.

Men’s Volleyball

The No. 9 Queen’s Gaels men’s volleyball team had a big afternoon on Saturday as they won in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-18) over the York Lions in their OUA quarter-final playoff matchup at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC).

With the win, the Gaels are headed to the OUA Final Four which will be hosted by the McMaster Marauders. Queen's will play a semifinal match against the No. 10 Ryerson Rams while the other semifinal will feature McMaster against Waterloo.

As he has all season, Marko Dakic led the Gaels with 13 kills as well as picking up 10 digs and putting down a service ace.  Mike Tomlinson had 10 kills, six digs and three block assists while setter Jamie Wright had 33 assists.

Women’s Volleyball

The Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team saw their season come to an end Saturday as they fell in straight sets (26-24, 25-21, 25-19) to the Ryerson Rams in the OUA playoffs.

Shannon Neville led the way with 12 kills while setter Franzi Wilhelm had 35 assists.

Women’s Basketball

The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team (14-5) ended their regular season schedule with a 75-70 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues (8-11) at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) on Saturday evening.

Fighting for a higher seeding in the OUA playoff race, the Blues (8-11) spoiled a special night offensively for Jenny Wright, who shot 10-of-20 from the field and finished with a season-high 28 points. Wright was just one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with nine boards, two assists, five steals, and four blocks while going an impressive 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.

On Friday, the Gaels lost 66-61 to the Ryerson Rams (15-3) in a battle of nationally-ranked teams. Emily Hazlett led all players with 19 points, while Robyn Pearson chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double.

Men’s Basketball

Andrew Mavety scored a season-high 23 points and the Queen's Gaels men's basketball team (11-8) closed out their regular season with an 81-73 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-14) on seniors night at the Athletics and Recreation Centre Saturday evening.

Mavety, who was honoured along with fellow seniors Mark Paclibar and Ryall Stroud before the game, was 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from behind the three-point line. Sukhpreet Singh and Tanner Graham each tallied 15 points, and Graham added 12 rebounds for a double-double to go along with a game-high four blocks for the Gaels.

With the victory, it is likely that the Gaels will be hosting their first home playoff game in six seasons. The last time Queen's hosted a post-season contest was the 2009-10 season when they defeated Ryerson in the OUA East quarterfinals by a score of 79-76 in overtime.

On Friday, the Gael lost 70-68 to the CIS No. 3 ranked Ryerson Rams (16-2) as the visitors scored the winning basket with 1.2 seconds left. Singh tallied a game-high 23 points for the Gaels, and put his team up by one point on a great drive to the basket with just 5.9 seconds left in regulation.

Women’s Hockey

The Queen's Gaels women’s hockey team fell to the Nipissing Lakers in Game 2 of their first round series 3-2, coming just short of a comeback and losing the series 2-0.

The Gaels fell behind 3-0 in the second period but Nadia Larocca got them on the board before heading into the third. Nine minutes into the final frame Alisha Sealey cut the deficit to one but Queen’s was unable to find the equalizer. Goalie Caitlyn Lahonen made 25 saves.
