Gaels reach OUA Final Four

A quick roundup of Queen's Gaels teams in action over the weekend:

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The No. 5 Queen's Gaels took down the Lakehead Thunderwolves 81-53 in their OUA quarterfinal match Friday at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) in OUA women's basketball playoff action.

With the win, Queen's will now host the OUA Critelli Cup Final Four on March 3-4.

The Gaels got off to a fast start led by an Emily Hazlett basket and quickly opened up a 9-2 lead. However, the Thunderwolves pushed back and the teams would end the quarter tied 17-17.

The teams battled back and forth for much of the second quarter but in the final minutes before the half, Marianne Alarie and Veronika Lavergne went to work to put up 36-26.

In the third quarter, the Gaels pushed the pace and outscored Lakehead 21-12 to take a 19-point lead heading into the final quarter. From there it was all Gaels in the final frame with Alarie scoring nine of her 19 points. 

Joining Queen’s at the Critelli Cup Final Four are Windsor, McMaster and Carleton. The action starts Friday night at 6 pm as Queen’s takes on the Windsor Lancers in the first semifinal followed by the Carleton Ravens and the McMaster Marauders. The winners will face-off Saturday at 8 pm for gold while the losers will play for bronze Saturday at 6 pm. For tickets to the OUA Final Four at the ARC visit gogaelsgo.com/tickets.

MEN’S HOCKEY

The Queen's Gaels men’s hockey team eliminated the No. 7 Concordia Stingers with a 2-0 win on Sunday night in the third and deciding game of their OUA East semifinal series. The Gaels now face the McGill Redmen in the OUA East final. 
In a quick-paced game Queen’s got on the board near the midpoint of the opening period as Darcy Greenaway tucked in a rebound off a Brock Edwards shot.

With goalie Kevin Bailie continuing his outstanding play in net Dylan Anderson sealed the result and the series with an empty-netter late in the third period. Bailie finished with his second shutout of the series stopping all 42 shots and has 0.971 SV% through the playoffs so far.

The Gaels now face the McGill Redmen in the OUA East final. Game 1 is set for Wednesday, March 1 at 7 pm.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The Queen's Gaels women’s hockey team lost in double overtime 2-1 to the No. 10 Toronto Varsity Blues in their deciding game three of the OUA quarterfinal playoffs. As a result Queen's is eliminated from the McCaw Cup OUA playoffs and will now turn their focus to the hosting the U SPORTS national championship starting March 16.

After forcing Game 3 with a 2-1 win Saturday the teams once again engaged in a tight battle.

Toronto opened the scoring in the first period but Queen’s bounced back in the second to tie it up on a goal from Megan Farrell. After a scoreless third period the game went to overtime with Toronto outshooting Queen's 30-13 but goalie Stephanie Pascal keeping Queen’s in it.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Meagan O'Brien of the Varsity Blues scored the game and series winner.

As hosts, Queen’s will play for the national championship March 16-19 in Napanee.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen's Gaels women’s volleyball team (10-9) finished off the regular season with a four-set victory over the Brock Badgers (5-14) Saturday, highlighted by a 27-kill performance from Caroline Livingston.
Queen’s took the match 25-27, 25-22, 27-25, 25-16 and Livingston added 13 digs for the Gaels while Sierra Harvey directed the attack with 46 assists.

On Friday, the Gaels fell in straight sets to the No. 8 McMaster Marauders (16-3) 19-25, 18-25, 11-25.

Queen's finishes in third place in the OUA East and will meet the Western Mustangs (15-4) to open the OUA playoffs.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen’s Gaels men’s volleyball team (10-8) topped the Brock Badgers (3-14) in five sets Saturday for a 17-25, 25-15, 25-12, 22-25, 15-11 win.

Markus Trence  led the way for the Gaels with 20 kills while picking up seven digs. Zac Hutcheson had a strong game from the service line for Queen’s with seven aces while also rounding out the stat sheet with eight kills, seven digs and three blocks.

On Friday the Gaels lost in straight sets to the No. 2 McMaster Marauders (17-0), falling 14-25, 16-25, 15-25.

The Gaels finish the regular season fourth in the OUA East and will face McMaster in the opening round of the playoffs Friday, March 3 in Hamilton.
